Entrecourorium (Flower of Love)
The project for this studio was meant to explore the concept of intercourse its various definitions. Those definitions being: 1) dealings or communication between individuals, groups, countries, etc. 2)interchange of thoughts, feelings, etc. 3) sexual relations or a sexual coupling, especially coitus. We were supposed to explore one or multiple of these definitions with our projects and bring to light what those definitions mean to us as individuals.
My project focused on the first and the third definition of intercourse. I designed for a counter-culture collective who adhere to the doctrine of the Libertine movement, an 18th century French ideology that rejected the fundamentalist Christian revival happening at the time. Founded by John WIlmont, 2nd Earl of Rochester, the Libertines lived by pushing hedonism and self-indulgence as far as it goes believing that no human being should be denied the things they desire due to cultural standards. My project focused on sacred geometries such as the square representing the earth and the circle representing the heavens. The interior was separated into a central Ritual (orgy) space, 4 Leisure Spaces, and 4 Agricultural spaces. At the center of the Ritual space stands an obelisk which has multiple symbolic representations: An axis mundi, representing that this collective see themselves as the center of the “new universe” or as a phallus for obvious reasons of sexual connotations. Color was a large aspect of my project as well with color being used not only as a diagrammatic indicator but also to represent the experiential qualities of the spaces themselves with: pink (joy, sexuality, love), Light blue (Calm, Rest), Yellow (Freedom, Confidence), Deep Blue/Purple (Health, Harvest), Green (Fertility, Protection), Red (Lust, Strength, Battle).
My project was meant to make the viewer explore within themselves. It was meant make the user think about what we design as good or bad, to make one think about what society defines as good or bad. Essentially the project is mean to make an individual think for themselves.
